THE Sacred Heart Brothers, a Catholic religious congregation, wants to reclaim St. Aloysius College Nyapea, one its oldest schools in Zombo district, from the Government.
Brother Charles Kabenda, the Nairobi congregation superior general, said they wanted to assume the school’s management to improve its declining academic performance and infrastructure.
“We are here to reconstruct St. Aloysius College Nyapea. It was one of the best institutions in Uganda, but now it is down,†Kabenda said.
He noted that the congregation will take over the management and reconstruction of the school next year. “If the Government agrees to our request, we will start reconstructing the college in early 2011,†Kabenda added.
The pronouncement by the Sacred Heart Brothers to take over the school has received wide support from the parents and the old students of the school.
Stanislaus Ogen, the Nebbi district education officer, said taking over the management of the school will bring back the lost glory of the school.
“As partners in the education system, we welcome the idea of reclaiming the school,†Ogen said.
Matthew Okoi, the chairperson of the school’s old boys association, said the deteriorating condition of the school was worrying.
He was concerned that students from the school cannot access public university due to poor performance.
“This year, only three students from Nyapea College were admitted in the public universities. This is sad because development comes from education,†Okoi lamented.
He said the old boys and the founders had developed a five-year plan to revive the school.
Okoi blamed both the administration and the students for the poor performance of the school.
The college only admitted about 170 students in both Ordinary and Advanced levels this year.
Emmy Kakura Kizito, the Zombo district LC5 charmian, also welcomed the idea of the Sacred Brothers taking back the management of the school.
St. Aloysius College Nyapea was started in 1932 in Gulu, but was transferred to Nyapea, the then Nebbi district, in 1940 because of World War II, a ccording to 74-year-old John Alfred Orochi, an old boy of the school.
