EDITOR: I wish to thank the women rights activists for the pledge to assist Judith Koriang. The 20-year-old woman was sentenced to death by the court martial for killing her husband.

Her problems started after UPDF soldiers and their spouses were tested for HIV. Judith tested positive and her husband negative and he started harassing her.

Women activists supported Amina Lawal, a Nigerian woman who had been sentenced to death in Nigeria for committing adultery in 2003.

The Nigerian Ambassador to Uganda then, Sam Edem reaffirmed that Amina Lawal’s case was positively being handled and everything possible would be done her rights and her child’s were respected.

Judith needed her husband to confide in and for emotional support more than ever at that moment and not repeated insults. She acted out of provocation from her husband who also wanted to kick her out of their marital home.

In that situation Judith was not thinking straight as she had not yet accepted her HIV status and not recovered from the shock. The husband should have been patient and calm and involved elders in getting them a lasting solution.
