MASAKA Hospital theatre has been closed for disinfection against tetanus. The Masaka district health officer, Dr. Stuart Musisi, said the closure has sparked off an influx of patients to Kitovu Hospital.

“Kitovu Hospital is currently facing difficulties in handling the overwhelming number of patients yet it is a private hospital,” he noted.

Musisi said most patients from Masaka Hospital are too poor to afford the services.

Primary health care state minister James Kakooza said the Government would clear the bills of patients who are referred by Masaka Hospital to Kitovu Hospital.

Addressing the annual review conference for haealth service providers from Masaka Diocese at Bwala Social Centre in Masaka last week, Kakooza said the health ministry would support Masaka Hospital to set up a new and modern theatre.

“I know that the crisis is caused due to a delay by the Japanese International Corporation Agency to build the planned theatre for Masaka Hospital,” Kakooza observed.

Responding to the financial constraints facing Non-Government Organisation (NGO) hospitals, he said the Government will enroll their medical staff on the Government payroll.

“We shall give priority to religious-founded hospitals,” Kakooza said.

“Many of the medical workers in NGO hospitals have been running away for greener pastures rendering their hospitals helpless and we want this to stop.”

Kakooza suggested that the money NGO hospitals have been spending on salaries be diverted to improve other services for the clients.
