TRADE and tourism minister Maj. Gen. Kahinda Otafiire has blasted presidential media advisor John Nagenda for accusing him of being involved in the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) scandal.

Recently, Nagenda said Otafiire had a dirty trail, which followed him.

He questioned Otafiire’s relationship with the new UWA board chairman, Dr. Boysier Muballe, in relation to the changes in the wildlife authority.

“Might the minister and his UWA chairman be involved in a hot tango? Rightly or wrongly, the minister in question, Gen. Kahinda Otafiire, is often stalked by scandals imitating hungry hyenas. Certain unfortunate people suffer from this pestilence, the nasty smell chasing them wherever positioned!”

In his column, Nagenda referred to Muballe as a “baying, posturing braggart”.

“He (Muballe) has made allegation after allegation, including impropriety against former UWA boss Moses Mapesa and his team.”

After a forensic report on UWA was presented to the press on Friday, Otafiire said: “Nagenda was saying that I have a dirty trail which follows me everywhere. If this is the dirty trail he is referring to, I’m ready to plead guilty.”

The report exposed the way UWA was mismanaged and its funds swindled by its previous administration.

“Nagenda cannot insult us like that. It is fine to insult me. I will hit back at him at a given time somewhere else. But for him to insult the doctor (Muballe), that is wrong. These people are doing their work. He should have consulted before making such statements,” Otafiire added.

He said he was given a job to do and he would not abandon it.

“Those who will be found guilty will have to face the law,” Otafiire said.

Nagenda had also questioned the speed at which Muballe was taking action in UWA.

“His breakneck speed and the rate at which he pops up with announcements, some contradicting each other, border on hysteria. Who is the monkey driving this man?” Nagenda asked.

Mapesa was first suspended with Sam Mwandha, the director for conservation, before he was dismissed, last month. The two were accused of being part of a scam in the gorilla marketing campaign.

Muballe sacked Mapesa on grounds that the previous board, headed by Andrew Kasirye, had deferred his appointment to the new board.

The board chairperson also argued that the minister had appointed Mapesa prior to the coming into force of the new board.
