KOBOKO mayor Joseph Banga and finance head Tom Adriko were yesterday charged with causing financial loss of over sh5m.

They appeared before the Anti-Corruption Court Chief Magistrate, Irene Akankwasa, and denied the charges.

Banga was charged with two counts of abuse of office and causing financial loss, while Adriko was charged with causing financial loss and embezzlement.

Adriko is alleged to have altered a payment voucher for sh2m to sh5m for purchase of land.

The duo, who were represented by Renato Kania, were remanded to Luzira Prison until October 6 when the case comes up again.

Akankwasa rejected their bail application, saying it would be granted by a trial magistrate to whom the case is yet to be allocated.

Prosecution, led by Grace Ntege, said Banga in May, 2008 signed a land sale agreement worth sh5.8m on behalf of Koboko Town Council without the approval of the council.

She said Adriko embezzled sh3.8m.
A person convicted of causing financial loss is liable to imprisonment of 14 years or paying a fine of sh7m or both. Abuse of office carries a sentence of seven years imprisonment or a fine of sh3.4m or both.
