BUSINESS leaders from East Africa are set to meet top European entrepreneurs for the first time in London, to discuss and strengthen trade and investment relations.

BUSINESS leaders from East Africa are set to meet top European entrepreneurs for the first time in London, to discuss and strengthen trade and investment relations.

At least 200 firms from the East African Community (EAC) and Europe are expected to converge at the inaugural Opportunities East Africa London Expo slated for November 11 and 12.

The expo aims at assisting traders from East Africa explore market opportunities in Europe while giving European entrepreneurs chance to seek investment opportunities in the region.

“This expo is the UK’s biggest business event for anyone interested in doing business or expanding their business between the EAC member states and Europe,” said Edward Katende, the managing director of Focus on Uganda, a UK-based multimedia trade and investment communication company.

The trade promotion expo comes in the wake of the launch of the EAC market, which allows for free movement of goods, services, labour, capital and technology within EAC’s partner states.

Eriya Kategaya, Uganda’s minister for EAC affairs, will lead the Ugandan delegation which will mainly constitute representatives from the Uganda Private Sector Foundation and Uganda Investment Authority to the expo.

The EAC trading bloc presently has a combined Gross Domestic Product of over $75b and has since its revival in 2001 attracted external investment interest from mainly Europe because of its endowed natural resources including oil and gas, fertile soils and minerals.

Europe has the necessary capital and appropriate technology that the EAC needs to manufacture competitive products for international markets.

The expo will convene companies including IBM, Nestle, Siemens, Diageo and Kencell with operations in Europe.

Ambassador Juma Mwapachu, the Secretary General of the EAC will officiate at the opening.
