A HOUSEwife who locked her two children and they got burnt as she drank waragi has been sentenced to 15 months in jail for neglecting to provide security.

Agnes Namatala, 25, locked up her children in the house that had a burning candle and went to the bar.

Prosecution, led by Emily Ninsiima, told court that Namatala, a resident of Lutuula village in Luweero district committed the offence on the night of August 3.

Ninsiima said the burning candle lit up the children’s beddings before setting the whole house ablaze.

A postmortem report from Luweero health centre, which was exhibited in court, indicated that the ‘children were completely burnt, almost beyond recognition’

When the facts were read to her, Namatala admitted that they were correct. She, however, requested for leniency, saying she was a first offender.

The magistrate observed that although Namatala was a first offender, and had not wasted court’s time by pleading guilty, her negligence had caused death of the two children.

She was sentenced to 15 months imprisonment for each of the two counts, which the magistrate said she would serve concurrently.
