Uganda tames Sri Lanka

JUDE Kermundu and Ambrose Kamanyire made two tries each, as Uganda came from 0-5 down to beat Sri Lanka 35-5 and register their first win in the final Group D match at the Commonwealth Games Seven’s Rugby yesterday.

JUDE Kermundu and Ambrose Kamanyire made two tries each, as Uganda came from 0-5 down to beat Sri Lanka 35-5 and register their first win in the final Group D match at the Commonwealth Games Seven’s Rugby yesterday.

Uganda, beaten by England 55-0 and Australia 33-0, rallied past Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka’s Saliya Hadapangodange struck first with a try in the third minute before Lawrence Wakabi responded for Uganda. Kermundu and Kamanyire also had a try each for a first half score of 21-5 in favour of Uganda.

After interval, tries by Kermundu and Kamanyire sealed the win for Uganda after a disappointing day when they were humiliated by a classy Endland and Australia.

“It is a good experience for us. We are playing with some of the top teams in the world. ,” said Benon Kizza after the game.

Earlier, England won a thriller against Australia in the opening stages of the rugby sevens at the Commonwealth Games while an improving Kenyan side pulled off an upset against Samoa.

Reigning champions New Zealand meanwhile cruised into the quarter-finals seeking a record fourth consecutive gold for their star-studded team that is favourite to top the podium.

The day’s best action was between England-Australia clash in the game of the day which ended 21-19.
