EMMA Hakizimana is singer Iryn Namubiru’s fan. He had a chance to hang out with the artiste at the Kampala Serena Hotel last week, and later told Blitz’s Pidson Kareire how the encounter
was like.

Occupation: Master’s degree student, Kampala University, Mutundwe Campus.
Favourite music: R&B

What’s your attraction to Iryn Namubiru?
Her music and performances just cut it for me. I don’t understand Luganda, but I am keen on her videos. I also find her style unique.

Do you have a particular song of hers you like more than the rest?
Oh yeah! Nkuwenki is my favourite, but her latest hit; Begombeko is also a charm.

I understand you were using French, how did you know she speaks French?
I heard she is married to a French man, but I was not sure. So when I asked and she confirmed, we straightaway switched to French. She told me she stays in France with the husband and children. And she is so fluent, I was so impressed.

Are you fluent in French yourself?
Of course; French is my second language. I am from Rwanda, a francophone country. Apart from the local languages, French is the second language.

How did you feel about meeting Iryn?
It was really nice to meet a Ugandan celebrity who speaks my second language. I felt at home.

Why did you want to meet Iryn?
I wanted to be close and personal because I had never come so close to her, yet she is my number one female singer in Uganda. You see, there is always this urge to meet your favourite star; it is the only reason I was longing for her.

What did you notice about her?
She is not as fat as she appears on stage. She was also cool, easy and relaxed. She was so different from the usually serious one she is at shows.

What did you talk about?
She was so free; talked about her personal life, told me about her future plans and how she is helping disadvantaged children. She actually told me that she is planning to build a clinic for women.

What was on your mind when you sent a text to Blitz asking to meet her?
Honestly, I did not expect to meet her; and if I did expect it, Serena Hotel wasn’t a place I expected to meet her. I just sent the text, partly to prove this thing actually works.

Any doubts now?
Of course, not. I now know that Blitz actually chooses the fans from the SMSs we send.

What will stick to your memory about her?
Her honest smile and the venue where we met; remember it was a highly respected hotel.

Did you observe any mannerism about her?
Hhm, she has this short laughter she punctuates her conversation with.

What did you learn from this interaction with her?
I learnt that if you love something or someone, nothing should stop you from pursuing it. I pursued my favourite artiste and got to meet her.
