But you do not have to give up on the spice, you can resort to onion powder. Peter Mugamba, a chef, says onion powder is made from dehydrated ground onions.
The powder can be used directly to season recipes or made into a paste by adding a little water.
“When caught up by time, the powder is a perfect substitute although the flavour is more intense in fresh onions,†Mugamba says. Like other seasonings, the powder can be kept in a tightly closed container and stored in a cool dry place.
How to make onion powder: Peel onions and dice them into fine pieces. Spread them on a tray and heat in an oven at a temperature of 150 degrees, or place them in a food dehydrator until they dry.
Ensure that the particles can easily crumble and allow the onions to cool. Grind them or use a food processor until a powder forms. Store the powder in an air-tight container in a cool dry place.
