A US-based Ugandan soccer coach has urged local soccer body FUFA to plan beyond the on-going Nations Cup qualifiers if the national side - the Cranes are to make an impact on the big stage.

“The Cranes made a flying start in the qualifiers. But chances are that pillars in the current team could have burnt out by the finals in 2012 thus the need to start thinking of a transition,” noted Patrick Kabuye.

Kabuye, a former defender in Uganda’s U-21 and U-23 sides, advised FUFA to start preparing players in the 20 to 24 year bracket to take over the mantle. “Such players will be close to their peak, hence, fresher, determined and hungrier,” he noted adding that the same side would also fly the flag in the 2014 World Cup qualifiers.

“Qualifying for our first Nations Cup finals in 34 years will be good, but making it past the group stage at the finals will be great. We should avoid scenarios where injured players take four matches to heal because of age.”

Kabuye holds a masters in Kinesiology and has several coaching licenses. He is ready to help FUFA structure out a youth development structure. “The future lies in a solid U-14-23. If FUFA can get that right, then the sky will be the limit”.
