A recently-opened agricultural institute in Kikumbi, Mityana district, has started offering diploma courses.
The Mityana Agrovet Institute, which has been offering certificate courses for the past six years, now offers diploma courses in crop and animal husbandry as well as veterinary medicine.
The director, John Kintu, said the institute would be affiliated to Bukalasa Agricultural Institute for the next year, after which they will be fully independent.
Kintu revealed this while speaking at a ceremony to pray for third-year students who are due to sit for Uganda National Examinations Board examinations next week.
He said the high demand for agricultural professionals made the institute to start diploma courses.
Parents attending the ceremony asked the Government to extend support to agricultural institutes so as to encourage the children to take up agricultural courses.
“We request that as the Government plans, it puts emphasis on agriculture. Most of the people in villages depend on agriculture, but they lack information. The promotion of agricultural courses may boost the economy of the country further,†said Mark Kenani, one of the parents.
On the same occasion, a new students’ guild council was sworn in.
