THE commandant of the Anti Stock Theft Unit detachment at Chepsikunya in Kween district was among four people killed in a car crash at Tewei, 12km on the Kapchorwa-Sironko highway on Sunday.

Stephen Amecheku, 24, was driving a Toyota Carib car to Mbale on his way to Kampala, according to his colleague only identified as Odokonyero.

“He spent the night here and was due to meet Moses Sakira, one of our bosses, at the Kampala Police headquarters. I had proposed that he leaves the vehicle but he insisted that he would leave it in Mbale,” Odokonyero said.

The Police identified the other victims as Charles Mwanga, a businessman from Sipi sub-county, and his son, whose name had not yet been established. They were heading to Mbale Hospital for a medical consultation.

Also killed in the crash was Solomon Wajambuka of Kabeywa sub-county. His wife, Sofi Kwaga, was admitted at Kapchorwa Hosopital in critical condition.

Amecheku died of head injuries and suspected internal bleeding. It is suspected that he lost control of the vehicle following brake failure.

Witnesses said the vehicle was in bad mechanical condition.

A nine-month-old baby was the only passenger who escaped unhurt.
