IT is official; the nominees’ list for the third edition of MTV Africa Music Awards with Zain (MAMA) is out.
And Uganda’s popular duo, Radio and Weasal, have beaten all our big names here to a slot on the list, which has 11 categories.

The duo is nominated in the Best Group category, and they are up against Nigerian heavyweights P-Square, South Africa’s Teargas and Kenya’s P-Unit.

This means the two will be holding Uganda’s flag high at the awards ceremony, which will be held on December 11 at the Eko Expo Centre in Lagos, Nigeria.

This is the second time the MAMA ceremony will be held in Nigeria after the inaugural event in 2008 took place in the country’s capital Abuja, where Ugandan Babe Cool’s East African Bashment Crew was nominated in a major category while Tonicks was a nominee for a minor category – Listener’s Choice, which is no longer on the list.

Last year’s was held in Nairobi, Kenya, with Uganda having nominees Blu3, Bobi Wine and XOD.

Uganda has not yet been as lucky as bring home the golden microphone, which is the awards’ statuette – not that our artistes don’t have potential but because Ugandans don’t vote. Let us beat this voting phobia and vote for our boys this time.

Go to www.mama.mtvbase.com or www.mtvmama.mobi and vote. Subscribers of Zain can also vote via SMS by texting BG Radio and Weasal to 6262.

Nigeria and South Africa usually win big at this event because their people are big-time voters. For this year’s event, Nigeria as usual leads the pack with an impressive 13 nominations.

P-Square has three (Artist of the Year, Best Group and Best Video), and two for MAMA 2009 winner 2Face Idibia (Best Male, Artist of the Year), two for Wande Coal (Best Anglophone, Best Male) and two for Banky W (Song of the Year, Best Video).

Their female artistes too are high contenders, with Best Female nods for Nneka and Sasha, as well as a Brand: New nomination for Mo Cheddah.
D’banj, who has four MAMA trophies to his name, has yet another nomination in the Song of the Year category for the hit Fall in Love.

South Africa has seven nominations.
Fally Ipupa from the Democratic Republic of the Congo scores the highest individual number of the nominations; four in number, including Artiste of The Year.

The annual event, which awards excellence in African music based on young Africans’ music tastes, also has a category that recognises international musicians, the reason we have Amerca’s Rihanna, Drake, Eminem and Rick Ross vying for the Best International Artiste award.

There are two new categories this time: The Best Francophone and Best Lusophone (Portuguese speakers) categories.

While unveiling the 2010 MAMA nominees’ list in Lagos on Saturday, Alex Okosi, senior vice president and managing director, MTV Networks Africa, said the addition of the two categories is an indicator that the pan-African music scene has grown.
