Dear Paul,
AN ulcer is a wound. If it occurs in the stomach or part of the intestine, it is called gastric or peptic ulcer. The cause of most ulcers is an infection by a germ called helicobacter pylori. Other factors include some drugs which may erode the wall of the intestines.

Causes include taking diclofenac, pain killer, on an empty stomach; caffeine, alcohol, smoking and stress. Peptic ulcers can be treated, but most times they respond slowly to treatment, so the medicine has to be taken for a long time.

However, a doctor should first confirm that one has ulcers before treatment is given. Different drugs are used, depending on the severity, so it is necessary to a see a doctor.
