MARATHON runner Daniel Chepyogen’s new national record of 2:08.24 on Sunday saw him join Sarah Nambawa in booking a place at next year’s World Championships. The event is due in Daegu, Korea in August.
Chepyogen and triple jumper Nambawa, an area champion at the Africa senior Athletics championships, are the first two athletes to qualify for the biennial event, whose qualifying season opened October 1.
According to the new qualifying rules released by the international athletics body - IAAF, all area champions automatically qualify for the world event, which makes Nambawa an automatic qualifier.
Only long distance qualifying times have been released by the international body, with the track times awaiting the IAAF council approval next month. The marathon qualifying time is 2:17.00
Chepyegon broke Alex Malinga’s national record of 2:12:12 when he finished fifth in the Frankfurt marathon, an IAAF gold label race.
