SEVERAL leaders in Lango, including the Amolatar Woman MP, Caroline Okao, defected to the NRM as President Yoweri Museveni launched his campaign in the sub-region.

Addressing huge rallies in Amolatar and Dokolo districts, Museveni urged the people to vote for the NRM in the general elections next year.

“I am happy with the support you are showing for the NRM. Thanks to the party mobilisers who have managed to gather you in large numbers. I urge you to support the NRM presidential candidate, who is me, and support all the other party flag-bearers,” he stated.

Museveni, who was flanked by the northern Uganda reconstruction state minister, David Wakikona, arrived in a helicopter at the Amolatar district Boma Grounds.

Huge crowds, donned mostly in yellow T-shirts, chanted Museveni’s praises. Presidential elections will be held on February 18.

Museveni officially received Okao, who was elected to Parliament as an independent. Okao, who has been working closely with the opposition, will stand on an NRM ticket in the coming elections.

“I would like to announce my commitment to work with you. I joined politics because of the suffering I saw my people in, but your government has solved a lot of the problems, so I don’t see why I should not work with you,” she said as the crowd cheered on.

The UPC sub-county chairperson, Patrick Onono, also crossed to NRM with a dozen other opposition supporters.

The President launched a power line that will be connected from Obulubul in Kaberamaido district through Ochero to Amolatar district.

Museveni carried out the symbolic launch by erecting the first electricity pole.

He also promised that a ferry to ply the Namasale-Nakasongola route on Lake Kyoga would soon be acquired. This, he said, would reduce the distance from Amolatar to Kampala to a mere 180km.

The President donated an ambulance to the district. He said the Government would continue to empower the local people through the National Agriculture and Advisory Services (NAADS) programme.

“People have been complaining about the method of distributing NAADS funds, but we have changed that. Each village will now have one development cell comprising of all adults, who will meet and select the people who will receive the materials from NAADS”.

He said many development programmes were evident but opposition figures had eyes but could not see them and even those who see, were too dishonest to acknowledge what they see.
