THE Kaliro district LC5 chairperson, Elijah Dhikusooka Kagoda, has joined the list of NRM supporters who have defied party orders and got nominated as independents in the local council elections.

Kagoda lost the party primaries to Wycliff Ibanda, who was the district vice-chairman. Immediately after the primaries, Kagoda reshuffled his cabinet and sacked Ibanda.

Kagoda, whose symbol is a bicycle, was nominated on Thursday by the district returning officer, Edrisa Mamuli, to contest for the Kaliro LC5 seat.

Ibanda was also nominated shortly after. Also nominated for the same seat was Moses Gabwiire Binumuse, of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

Ibanda and his supporters stormed the streets before holding a rally at Bulumba trading centre in Kaliro town council where he unveiled his programme.

Meanwhile, 37 district councillors were nominated to contest for the various sub-county seats at the district.

Of these, 17 were independents, 12 were NRM, six from Forum for Democratic Change, one from the Uganda People’s Congress and one from PDP.

Sarah Kyalakaba (NRM) and Hadjia Namwaise (independent) were nominated to vie for the Nawaikoke sub-county woman councillor’s seat. David Kaswa (UPC) will also contest in the same sub-county as a directly elected councillor.

In Bumanya sub-county, Catherine Mubhedhere (NRM), Noel Gabwiire (FDC) and Esther Namusobya (independent), were cleared to tussle it out for the district woman councillor seat.

While in Kaliro town council in Namugongo sub-county, Harriet Nankya (NRM) and Beatrice Kiige Nankya (FDC) will contest for the seat together with Mariam Nanangwe and Janepher Mutono, both independents.

Monica Ngobi, Joyce Kabejja, both independents, will compete for the Gadumire sub-county seat with the NRM flag-bearer Kulata Namugonya, while Florence Naigaga (NRM) will stand for the Namwiwa sub-county seat.
