HAJJI Ahmed Kawoya Mugaino, who lost the Kamuli LC5 seat in 2007 after the High Court found fault with his academic qualifications, was on Thursday nominated to contest for the same seat.

It was, however, a gruelling process as Electoral Commission officials went through his papers for over five hours. Mugaino, who arrived at the nomination centre at about 10:00am, was cleared at about 4:00pm.

“You have fulfilled the conditions to my satisfaction and are therefore dully nominated,” the Kamuli returning officer, Samuel Kiyingi, announced, sending Mugaino’s supporters into jubilation.

New vision established that Mugaino presented an academic transcript from Kampala University in the field of business studies. He is the National Resistance Movement party flag-bearer in the race that is likely to attract over four candidates.

Mugaino described reports that had been going around disputing his qualifications as hearsay.

After losing the seat in 2007, Mugaino was appointed resident district commissioner for Mpigi and later presidential advisor on Busoga affairs, a post he held until recently when he resigned to contest for the Kamuli LC5 seat.

On the same day, Karoli Dhizaala, a former Kamuli town clerk, was nominated as an independent candidate for the LC5 seat.

Although he is a known NRM supporter, Dhizaala avoided the party primaries preferring to stand as an independent.
