POLICE chief Maj. Gen. Kale Kayihura has promoted over 6,700 officers in one of the biggest promotions in the Force in the recent past.

POLICE chief Maj. Gen. Kale Kayihura has promoted over 6,700 officers in one of the biggest promotions in the Force in the recent past.
The promotions were mainly in the lower ranks, pushing some into the bracket of commissioned officers.
In the promotions made public over the weekend, Kayihura took into account the officers’ qualifications, distinguished performance and length spent at a lower rank.
A total of 209 officers were elevated from the rank of assistant inspector of Police to inspector, 47 from Police constable to inspector, 346 from Police constable to assistant inspector of Police, 309 from Police constable to sergeant, 1,559 from corporal to sergeant and 4,282 from Police constable to corporal.
Of those promoted from assistant inspector of Police to inspector, nine were women.
Those from Police constables to inspector were 5, Police constables to assistant inspector of police 41, Police constables to sergeant 69, Corporal to Sergeant 230 and over 600 from the rank of Police constable to corporal.
Acting Police spokesperson Vincent Sekate on Saturday said the promotions take immediate effect.
“They were overdue. They are meant to improve command in the Force and at the same time, increase the morale of the serving officers,†Sekate said.
“They were based on capability, hard work, past record, qualifications and courses attended,†he explained.
Sekate said due to the recent expansion of the Force, change in the command and control structure was necessary.
“This created the need for commanders at senior, middle and lower levels,†he said.
He added that the promotions were also a reward for exemplary performance.
“With the restructuring of the Force, came new offices and vacancies as senior officers were elevated, creating vacancies along the ladder, which had to be filled,†he said.
By yesterday, there was word that more promotions were expected.
