CLOSE to 70 candidates eying various political posts in Hoima municipality have been nominated to contest in the 2011 general elections.

CLOSE to 70 candidates eying various political posts in Hoima municipality have been nominated to contest in the 2011 general elections.

Among those cleared are candidates for the Hoima mayoral seat, municipal councillors and division district councillors.

Those nominated for the mayoral seat are Mary Mugasa, who was nominated on Thursday on the NRM ticket, and incumbent Francis Atugonza of FDC, who was nominated on Friday.

Mugasa emerged winner in the recent NRM primaries, beating three other candidates - Maxwell Kaboyo, the municipal party chairman, Ronald Tumusiime and William Kunihira. Atugonza went through unopposed in the FDC party primaries.

Mugasa pledged to improve access roads, education, health and infrastructures development in the municipal council.

Atugonza said he will lobby support for the development of Hoima.

Some of the candidates cleared to run as division and municipal councillors include Bernadette, Monday Magritte and Yahaya Baguma.

Hoima municipal council comprises of Kahoora, Bujumbura, Mparo and Busiisi divisions.

Erasmus Kimbowa, the district retuning officer, said they had nominated every candidate who met the requirements.
