ABOUT 200 Muslims have missed the annual Hajj pilgrimage to the holy cities of Mecca and Medinah in Saudi Arabia because of late registration.
The chairman of the Federation of Uganda Hijja Offices, Sheikh Yahaya Lukwago, said: “By August 16, we had registered 1,000 pilgrims and we forwarded the list to the Saudi authorities who issue visas basing on the number of hotel rooms booked by each country.
Priority was given to those who registered first. The 200 who applied late missed out.â€
Every Muslim is required by Islamic law to make a pilgrimage to the two holy cities if they are able. The annual Hajj begins in the 12th month of the Islamic year and ends with the celebration of Idd el-Adhuha, which is characterised by the slaughtering of animals.
This year’s Idd-el Adhuha is expected to be celebrated on November 16.
