AKBAR Hussein Godi joined Parliament in 2006 as one of the youngest MPs. Prior to that he had little experience in politics and hardly any employment history.

Born 28 years ago in Arua, Godi joined Parliament on the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) ticket to represent Arua Municipality. Soon after, he enrolled for a bachelor’s degree in law at Kampala International University (KIU).

He lost in the recent FDC primaries but there is word that he will stand as an Independent in the coming elections.

Godi is facing murder charges at Mukono High Court. He is accused of murdering his wife Rehema Ceasar, who he had separated with, after having misunderstandings.

The youthful legislator married Ceasar in 2007. Shortly after the wedding, the couple had domestic problems. A year later, his wife complained to relatives that Godi would mistreat, beat and threaten to kill her.

Caesar was shot dead on December 4, 2008 on the Mukono-Kayunga Road and her body dumped near Mpoma Satellite Station. Godi was apprehended as the key suspect, but released on bail two months later. Godi has denied the charges.

According to the law, he is presumed innocent until proven guilty. In criminal cases such as murder the judge requires a high level of proof before conviction.

If there is any doubt about whether the accused person committed a crime, the judge has to acquit him or her.

In the Penal Code any person found guilty of murder shall be sentenced to death.
