HAVING battled stomach problems for long, Georgina was advised to abandon caffeinated drinks for herbal tea. A naturopathic (natural medicine) doctor recommended that she takes ocimum (popularly known as omujaja). After a week of routine drinking of the herb, her health was okay.

Herbalists and naturopathic doctors have discovered great health benefits in this herb that commonly grows as a wild plant. Omujaja is known to many as a type of herbal tea and is available in many groceries.

Dr. Giles Mugume, a nutritionist in Kampala, says the herb is one of the world’s most sought after curative plants. In fact, he says, omujaja is about to replace ordinary tea.

Mugume says this wonder plant has almost replaced conventional medicine and many beverages.

Some people mix it with green tea as a spice. However, Dr. Deepak Patel, a herbalist in Kampala, advises that one dries the herb and stores it in its natural state. “Preservatives, when added to the herb, destroy its natural contents and introduce toxins,” Deepak says.

Curative benefits of omujaja
Keeps blood pressure in check
Relieves or prevents spasms (stiffness of muscles)
Eases tension
Boosts appetite
Cleanses the blood
Lowers blood sugar and keeps diabetes in check

Lowers stress and prevents insomnia (sleep disorder)
It is an anti-inflammatory remedy that keeps disease at bay
Curbs cholesterol
It is a natural herb product that increases the body’s resistance to stress, trauma, anxiety and fatigue.

‘Omujaja’ recipe
Ocimum, commonly known as omujaja, is more than just a spice. Moses Ssenoga, a naturopathic (natural medicine) doctor at Mukago Sanitarium in Mbuya, recommends the herb for the treatment of flu and asthma.

A glass of omujaja helps relieve stress, tension and calms high blood pressure. Ssenoga says fresh leaves of the herb when crushed or squeezed provide relief from an insect bite or sting. Ssenoga’s recipe:

Procedure
Wash the leaves in clean water
Boil water
Add the leaves and set a side for three to five minutes, and drink
