A total of 45 districts are to receive supplementary funds to support health programmes in their communities.

The funds, amounting to $40m (about sh90b), will be provided by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

The five-year grant is intended to address challenges faced by districts in delivery of services, among them insufficient government funding and inadequate human resource.

The fund will also cover technical assistance to the 13 districts from central region, 12 from western, 10 in the eastern and 10 for northern.

Under the Strengthening Decentralization for Sustainability programme, assorted health supplies will be given to communities. The kits will include mosquito nets and HIV treatment kits.

LC1 chairpersons in the selected districts will also receive funds to monitor development projects.

Addressing a press conference at the Media Centre in Kampala yesterday, Charles Katarikawe of the local government ministry said the programme would focus on mobilising communities to participate in development programmes.

USAID’s chief of party for HIV/AIDS, health and education Elise Ayers said the programme would focus on strengthening the capacity of local governments to extend services to the citizens.
