Dear Doctor,
I am a young woman and have started developing a beard. I am worried and would like to stop the beard from growing. What should I do?
Rachel

Dear Rachel,
WOMEN are also capable of developing facial hair, though significantly less than men. This is caused by a number of hormonal factors.

Strong medication like antiretrovirals and cancer drugs are known to interfere with the hormonal imbalance, sparking off a beard. Genetics also play a big role in the development of a beard among women. There is not much that you can do to prevent the beard.

However, trying to remove the beard will stimulate the hormones that produce them. If the cause is drug-related, you could stop taking the drugs, but there are some drugs like antiretroviral or cancer drugs that you cannot do without, so you can just try to reduce them.
