ZAIN'S chief Yesse Oenga has said the intention of dropping call rates and introducing the sh200 airtime scratch card is to become a mass service player.

“This has to be to a scale that allows us to make money,” he said at the launch last week. Zain Uganda’s launch of the sh200 airtime voucher, days before tomorrow’s rebranding to Airtel, lifts the market’s expectations on what surprises will be unveiled to the market.

The sh200 would have been the lowest denomination in the market if Warid Telecom did not counter it with a sh100 one on Saturday, effectively shifting the telecom battlefield into the size of scratch card business.

Warid chief executive officer, Madhur Taneja, said the decision was based on their desire to make telecommunication available to everyone through affordability.

“Now, anyone with sh100 will be able to easily make a phone call. A month ago, we started this revolution by drastically reducing call rates. Now everyone should be able to communicate,” he said.
Oenga Bharti’s model is one of a mass market driven by affordability.
