A Kenyan Makerere University student last Saturday won the inaugural Miss All-Central Universities pageant at Theatre La Bonita.

Beatrice Njau, a 22-year old computer science student, beat 13 other girls to the crown in a tightly-contested race that was attended mainly by university students.

Along with the crown, Njau gets to win a 50x50 plot of land located in one of the city suburbs, plus an all-expense-paid trip for two to Pretoria, South Africa.

Her prizes though were not handed over immediately, but the pageant’s organiser, Joan Nakintu, said they would be handed over to her in a few days.

The winner however left with a bonus when artiste Jose Chameleone suddenly turned up from the audience and surprised her with a sh500,000 spontaneous cash prize.

This was followed by thunderous applause from the audience, with some revellers prompting Firebase Crew president Bobi Wine, who was also in the audience, to challenge Chameleone’s generous offer.

Bobi, however didn’t respond, and the event continued with merrymaking.
Another Kenyan, Janette Nekesa, a hotel and tourism student at Kampala International University, was first runner-up and walked away with her prize of a 24-inch television screen.

Mya Pembe Nabbosa, from Kampala University, was both second runner-up and Miss Creative Wear. She took home a 21-inch television screen.

Overall, you could say it was one of very few (if any) national pageants that happened without one of those beauty pageant favouritism incidents, especially if juxtaposed with the mess we have had over the last many editions of the once-esteemed Miss Uganda contest.

This will pass the pageant off as really successful when the winner finally gets her other prizes. From her playful and confident disposition on the catwalk, you could tell she was enjoying herself, which is why she deserved it. By press time, no talk of malpractice had surfaced yet.

Nonetheless, some revellers were disgruntled, especially sympathisers of Ayishar Nagudi and Doreen Kabareebe, who gave this pageant a shot after losing at Miss Uganda in September. In fact, while Nagudi seemed to contain it, Kabareebe went behind the stage and cried bitterly at her loss.

The event was okay. The plush Theatre La Bonita ambience was as colourful as always, and just enough for the crowd. The entertainers’ line-up had Amarula Family, who by far pulled off the best gigs of the night, and Raba Daba among others.
