AFTER the PAM Awards made a resurrection to hold a 2010 edition last month, another music awards project that seemed to have breathed its last has bounced back — the Golden Music Awards that are organised by Abitex Productions.
About a year ago, you probably caught wind of the proprietor of Abitex Productions, Abbey ‘Abitex’ Musinguzi, going broke and quitting the awards. Well, Abitex last Friday launched the 2010 edition at Club Volts on Entebbe Road, to take place at the Commonwealth Resort, Munyonyo on December 17.
He said the event had only taken leave as they sought new sponsors with the ability to take it to a higher level.
“We have now taken care of that, and this year’s ceremony will definitely be a lot better. For starters, we have moved it from Nakivubo, where the previous three editions were held, to the more affluent Munyonyo venue,†said Abitex.
You will remember that the previous editions of the Golden Awards were disorganised, with poor categorisation of music, low public interest, an almost unanimous snubbing by artistes and a complete lack of glamour, with the galas looking like any other downtown concerts. We can only hope Abitex lives to his promises.
For starters, his launch at Club Volts still had very few artistes attending, mainly the less established, while all the big guns were absent. But Abitex maintains the artistes will be involved. In fact, they dominate the awards’ nomination list, which looks much like the one of the just-concluded PAM Awards.
Bebe Cool, Chameleone, Bobi Wine and Radio/Weasel are nominated for both Artiste of the Year and Best Male Artiste. The Female Artiste of the Year category has Iryn Namubiru, Juliana, Cindy and Grace Nakimera. Song of the Year has Omukwano Gunyuma by Samalie Matovu, Stamina by Eddie Kenzo, Kasepiki by Bebe Cool and Basiima Ogenze by Chameleone, among others.
