HUNDREDS of NRM supporters yesterday stormed Entebbe Airport to welcome Kampala mayoral aspirant Peter Ssematimba as he returned from a two-week working holiday in the US.

On arrival, Ssematimba blasted co-mayoral aspirant Erias Lukwago, describing his allegations that he (Ssematimba) lacked academic qualifications to stand for mayor as wolokoso (empty talk).

“Kampala needs focused leaders not rumourmongers like Lukwago,” Ssematimba said to applause from his supporters.

“Voters want leaders who can perform. Gone are the days of politics which depended on inciting people,” he added.

Lukwago petitioned the National Council of Higher Education (NCHE) two weeks ago, demanding a verification of Ssematimba’s papers.

Lukwago, who is the current Kampala Central legislator, criticised the Electoral Commission (EC) for nominating Ssematimba before the NCHE verified his papers.

However, the EC and the NRM executive last week defended Ssematimba’s qualifications.

Yesterday, Ssematimba said Lukwago had demonstrated cowardice and that the petition was an indication that he was already losing.

He explained that he did a course in medicine and another in computer science and wondered why Lukwago did not see them on the nomination forms.

“I submitted both certificates when I was being nominated, but Lukwago saw only one certificate of theology and decided to jump on that. Which kind of lawyer is he?” wondered the radio presenter turned politician.

Ssematimba also dismissed allegations that he had gone to the US to forge academic documents, explaining that he had gone on holiday with his family before the start of intense campaigns.
