By Taddeo Bwambale VICE-President Prof. Gilbert Bukenya has urged students to put more efforts in sciences. He said sciences will offer major solutions to the country’s problems.
Bukenya was speaking at a fundraising ceremony for St. Mbaga Catholic Church Kiziba in Masulita sub-county in Wakiso district last week.
He lauded the church for its development projects and for helping students to join the Christian faith, which he said was lacking in the modern world.
Over sh10m was raised in cash and pledges for the expansion of the church.
Bukenya and several of his family members held prayers to mark one year since the death of his son, Brian Bukenya, who was killed in a motor accident.
Monsignor Joseph Njala presided over a mass in honour of the late Brian and urged the congregation to use their time on earth to work towards having eternal life in heaven.
Bukenya thanked all the people who supported him during the trying time and said the contributions of his son on earth would be remembered annually through a get-together and mass.
The youth chaplain, the Rev. Fr. Jaccinto Kibuuka, thanked the Vice-President for helping to educate orphans in the area.
He said Annet Nalunga, a beneficiary, who acquired a masters degree in education, partnered with the area’s leaders to improve the road network, engage in poverty eradication and health campaigns.
The day’s events coincided with the festivities to mark the day of Christ the King and end of the Catholic year.
In a press statement, the Vice-President also commended the management of St. Pius Senior Secondary School Kiziba, a church-founded school, for instilling morals and intellectual smartness in the students.
Bukenya, who contributed sh2.5m, promised to help the school to get funding from the education ministry to put up new buildings.
He also pledged sh3m towards renovating the science laboratories.
