THE outgoing national youth female MP, Mariam Nalubega, was yesterday nominated to contest for Butambala district woman MP as an independent.

Nalubega lost in the NRM primaries to education minister Namirembe Bitamazire.

She was accompanied by hundreds of supporters, who took Gombe town by storm with deafening music and a brass band.

Residents of the town were overjoyed when she started supplying her posters with a picture of a radio and words ‘CBS’ inscribed on it. The radio station is owned by the Buganda Kingdom

“I have come to uplift the status of women, which Bitamazire had failed to do in all the years she has been an MP.”

Nalubega pledged to fight domestic violence, maternal mortality and promote girls’ education, if elected.

Butambala is one of the two districts that were carved out of Mpigi early this year. Bitamazire has been woman MP for Mpigi district for about 20 years. After the division, she decided to contest in Butambala. She is slated to be nominated today at 11:00a.m as the NRM flag bearer.

Nalubega insisted she was not a ‘rebel’ and was cheated in the primaries. “The constitution allows me to stand as independent,” she said, adding that the public was the High Court. I have come to this court and I know I will get a fair hearing.”

Others nominated for the same post included a UBC radio reporter, Winfred Muteekanga (28), who also came as independent. She said her aunt’s death in Gombe Hospital due to lack of drugs inspired her to join the race. She pleded to solicit for funds to improve health services in Butambala, if elected.
