FOUR candidates have been nominated to challenge Deputy Speaker of Parliament Rebecca Kadaga for the Kamuli district Woman MP seat.

Kadaga, also the Woman MP for Kamuli, was the first to be nominated at Kamuli Youth Centre on Thursday.

Kadaga’s supporters spotted yellow NRM T-shirts as they ushered in their candidate. At 10:30 am, the returning officer, Samuel Kiyingi, declared her duly nominated, it drew more excitement and ululations from supporters. Kadaga, who passed unopposed in the NRM primaries will face district councillor for Kamuli Town Council and Nabwigulu sub-county, Hajati Rehema Watongola and Mary Mutesi, both independent candidates.

Watongola lost in the NRM primaries in Bugabula North to the presidential adviser, Moses Kizige.

Mutesi, a lawyer with the Ministry of Justice, wanted to contest in 2006 but withdrew over unclear reasons.

She said Kadaga has worked for three terms and needs relief to give room to the younger generation.

Also nominated was FDC’s Proscovia Naikoba Kanakutanda and the vice-president of the People’s Development Party, Miriam Namwase.

Naikoba, who lost to Kadaga in 2006, said now that Budiope county that used to be Kadaga’s “vote bank”, was curved off Kamuli, she was assured of victory. Kadaga launched her manifesto at Century Hotel in Kamuli town.
