FOREIGN affairs minister Sam Kutesa has described his opponent in the Mawogola constituency parliamentary race, David Mushabe, as a joker.

Speaking to journalists after his rally at Lwebitakuli in Ssembabule district, Kutesa said he was amused by Mushabe’s decision to take a helicopter to Ssembabule. Mushabe, 48, is Kutesa’s nephew.

“I have capacity to own a personal plane. I pity Mushabe who is coming here to show off with a hired helicopter. It does not make sense for me to come in the constituency in a chopper where the people have burning issues related to poverty,” Kutesa said.

Recently, Mushabe hired a helicopter and interrupted Kutesa’s rally at Lwebitakuli. Mushabe, a Kampala lawyer, was nominated on Thursday as an independent candidate to run against his uncle.

He told New Vision that he did not have any personal grudge against Kutesa, adding that his interest was only to transform the politically troubled district of Ssembabule.

Other candidates in the Mawogola parliamentary race are Isha Ntumwa (independent), Faisal Ddamulira (Uganda Federal Alliance) and Baker Mukasa (IPC).

Ntumwa, a district councillor, is backed by Lwemiyaga MP Theodore Ssekikubo, former district Woman candidate Joy Kabatsi, and the Ssembabule district council chairman, Herman Ssentongo.

Kutesa has teamed up with many of the district NRM flag-bearers, including the district Woman MP, Hanifa Kawoya.
Mushabe does not belong to any of the camps.
