WHEN you hear “fashion awards†you are thinking glamour, style and elegance. But the inaugural Afrikan Fashion Walk Awards, held on December 1st at Silk Royale, to shine the spotlight on our home grown fashion talent, were anything but.
The event which took place Wednesday night attracted a measly crowd and no pizzazz. Walking away with the lifetime achievement award, Gen Elly Tumwine urged the public to invest in the creative industry to harness all the potential the industry has to offer.
He also showcased a number of his original designs and entertained the crowd with a couple of his songs.
The award for designer of the year went to Gloria Wavamunno, although she was not around to collect the glassy accolade while Sylvia Owori won two awards for most inspiring designer and media choice designer.
Xenson Ssenkaaba won the best male designer award and Lunar Yusuf, the upcoming designer award. She was one of only two people to walk away with a cash prize of sh1m. The other was Hilda Kwagga who won the award for best catwalk model.
Several designers showcased their collections. These included Gloria Wavamunno, Esther Kiwalla, Luna Yusuf, Star QT, Rebecca Achen, Peruth Apolot, Nina Kebirungi, Brenda Maraka.
The winners were picked 50/50 by a panel of expert judges and a public vote through SMS. 30% of the proceeds from the show will go towards helping children infected with HIV/AIDS.
Much as the highly anticipated night didn’t live up to expectation, a fantastic idea was birthed; a chance to celebrate and reward authentic Ugandan fashion.
