Kampala Northern Bypass is becoming dangerous

EDITOR: The Kampala Northern Bypass that was built to ease traffic in the city will soon become a dangerous road.

Construction near the road, breakdown of road barriers, pedestrian and cycle traffic that was never planned for, and theft of road signs pose a danger to all road users, especially drivers.

Last month, a truck carrying logs smashed through a barrier and fell on houses below the road between Kisaasi and Naalya roundabouts. The barriers have never been replaced.

The construction of a supermarket in Kiwatule near Naalya may be a danger to drivers if glass is used on the sides facing the road.

It may blind drivers during the day. Just after the Naalya roundabout on the way to Bweyogerere, someone created an access road on the left. Vehicles joining the bypass at this point do it blindly since it is in a bend and downhill.

It is just a disaster waiting to happen. I would like to know whether the Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA), has any plans plans to make this road safer.

UNRA' response: UNRA has taken note of a number of developers trying to construct illegal accesses and our road inspectors are constantly working to block them. There are only nine designated direct accesses to the bypass. The illegal structures in the road reserve are also constantly removed. A number of safety issues have also been noted and will be addressed during the construction of the second phase for dualling the entire road. This phase is expected to start next year and will include construction of more pedestrian footbridges and safe accesses for boda bodas.

We are working with the Police to fight the vice of stealing sign posts.
