WATER shortage in Ntinda, Kireka, Bweyogerere, Nalya, Banda and Namugongo areas will cease when National Water and Sewerage Corporation constructs a water reservoir in Namboole.

The General Manager Kampala Water-Eng Andrew Sekayizzi said the construction of a multi storage water reservoir was set in Namboole to address the rampant water shortages.

“We are aware of the low pressure coupled with inadequate water in the areas of Bweyogerere, Kireka, Namugongo, Kyaliwajala and others. We have a plan for this problem by constructing a reservoir in Namboole,” said Sekayizzi.

He was reacting to complaints from residents during a NWSC sensitization workshop held at Jokas hotel in Bweyogerere on Saturday.

“We are tired of waking up one morning only to find no water in the taps. When we call you tell that you announced in the radios. We want a solution rather than radio announcements and news paper adverts,” said Kiira mayor Mugerwa Mamerito.

Mamerito said the lack of water had left many families resorting to unsafe spring water that causes illness.

He urged NWSC to have a fall back position to address water shortages by drilling emergency bore-holes.

“You are now laying pipes to Kiira and its suburbs but remember to plan ahead because with Shimoni Primary Teachers college opening soon, the water demand will be high. You need to install big pipes to accommodate the big numbers in future,” said Mamerito.

Daudi Mugalya a resident said the stealing of water that NWSC is fighting will not end unless water shortages are addressed.

“People get low pressure due to big connections. You need to increase water supply so that your clients get enough water and stop stealing from neighbors,” he said.

The firms commercial manager Richard Muhangi said NWSC was laying bigger pipes to supply its customers better.

He said the operation ‘wet storm” is geared towards sensitizing the locals on the need to pay water bills as compared to stealing water.

In an earlier meeting held at Grassland in Bbunga, the Kampala Metropolitan police commander Andrew Sorowen vowed to arrest any person nabbed stealing water. "It is rather sad that some people pay their water bills genuinely while others resort to stealing. i will not hesitate to order the arrest of such people," he said.

Retired Supreme court judge Justice Kanyiehamba hailed NWSC for the excellent service of extending services closer to the people
