THE Kampala Mayoral candidates are spending most of their campaigning time hitting at each other rather than issues affecting city dwellers.
Kampala Central MP, Erias Lukwago, Micheal Mabikke, Makindye East MP and Francis Babu the NRM vice-chairman for Kampala.
Lukwago set the ball rolling when he questioned the authenticity of Ssematimba’s academic qualifications.
He doubted that Ssematimba’s certificate in theology was equivalent to the S.6 certificate.
However, Ssematimba has presented certified academic papers to the Electoral Commission and promised to go back for further studies, Lukwago insisted that Ssematimba bows out.
Ssematimba insists the National Council for Higher Education approved his papers in 2005. “I have both the academic papers and leadership skills, which a mayor should have,†he said.
Lukwago said Ssematimba was one of those implicated in the misuse of Global Fund, meant to fight HIV/AIDS.
However, Ssematimba has refunded the money after the Justice James Ogoola probe.
On his part, Babu sas his opponents do not have the size befiting a mayor. “Everyone resembles something. If I stood here with the other candidates and someone was asked to point at the mayor, he would surely point at me,†Babu said.
In the Inter Party Cooperation (IPC) camp both Lukwago and Michael Mabikke are also biting each other. Their bitterness stems from the fact that each of them claims to be the official flag bearer.
The bickering between Mabike and Lukwago has continued to split FDC with different leaders supporting one of the candidates.
Prominent IPC leaders, Hussein Kyanjo and Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda, Joyce Ssebugwawo and Sewava Serubiri have rallied behind Lukwago.
Even DP leaders like Ssebuliba Mutumba and Latif Sebaggala, who back Mao for presidency, have rallied behind Lukwago.
Some politicians who accompanied Mabike to the nominations, like Kibirige Mayanja have also shifted to Lukwago.
