PRESIDENT Yoweri Museveni has asked NRM political leaders in Butaleja district to unite.
Museveni, on his campaign trail yesterday, addressed two rallies in the district, where there was an evident power struggle between the incumbents and the flag-bearers, many of them new political entrants.
Hours before the President arrived in the newly-created Bunyoli West constituency, politicians bickered about allegations of misappropriation of funds meant for organising the rally.
One camp backing the Minister without Port Folio and party deputy secretary, Dorothy Hyuha, and the other supporting Bunyoli East MP Emmanuel Dombo are in conflict.
Dombo’s camp has the flag-bearer for district Woman MP, Serina Nebanda, who beat Hyuha to the position.
The NRM flag-bearer for the district chairman, Geoffrey Muyinja, and Bunyoli West party flag-bearer Jacob Wangolo, also belong to Dombo’s camp.
The incumbent district chairman, Richard Waya, who is also Hyuha’s brother and the loser in the Bunyoli West NRM primaries, supports her. Waya is contesting as an independent candidate.
As the President arrived at Bughanga Primary School for the rally, Hyuha readied herself to receive the President and introduce the rest to him, but Nebanda positioned herself ahead of her, prompting the incumbent to shove her aside.
Hyuha ordered her rival to move to the extreme end of the dignitaries’ line, to which Nebanda obliged.
But Dombo said: “This is not our function. This rally is for the President. We should not derail it. We shall sort ourselves out after this.â€
At both rallies, there was more drama when Waya moved forward when the President invited the flag-bearers for introduction.
Museveni asked all of them to go back to their seats.
“I will sort out the problems of these people,†he said.
Museveni thanked Hyuha for conceding defeat and bowing out of the contest for the district Woman MP.
“Hyuha did a good thing. I am going to consider her. I will not forget about her,†he said.
Museveni told the rallies at Bughanga and Mpologoma primary schools that the Government had addressed most issues, including providing free education and constructing health units.
The focus now, he said, would be on the economic empowerment of the people.
Museveni urged the people to utilise the Prosperity-for-All programme implemented through the National Agricultural Advisory Services and Northern Uganda Social Action Fund.
He said there was enough money for government to implement its projects, such as the construction of roads
The President said the Tororo-Nagongera-Butaleja-Namulumba–Lwangobi road would be tarmacked.
He said piped water would be extended to Busolwe and Butaleja townships.
Museveni disclosed that Butaleja district had been receiving sh800m annually for water, and asked the district leaders to explain to the people how the money had been used.
He promised that the Government would next year renovate Bukedi and Bugala colleges and Busaba, Busolwe, Busaba Seed, Butaleja, Hasahya, Kangolala, Mulalinga and Mugulu secondary schools.
Museveni urged the people to vote for the NRM and its flag-bearers.
