A woman stabbed her co-wife to death moments after her husband had whipped her following a disagreement.

The tragedy in which Mariam Nagarenda turned her wrath on Sylvia Nakigudde occurred last evening in Kalina Zone, Kibuli-Mutajazi, according to Davis Wandera, one of the people who took Nakigudde to hospital.

Wandera, a boda boda rider, said a quarrel erupted at dawn between Nagarenda and her husband, Moses Ssembusi.

Nagarenda reportedly accused her husband of favouring her co-wife.

“When the quarrel intensified, Ssembusi beat her and then left for work,” Wandera narrated.

Nagarenda, armed with a kitchen knife, reportedly stormed her co-wife’s home, about 100 feet from her dwelling, and stabbed her in the neck and stomach. Nakigudde, said to be in her early 20s, died moments after arriving at Kibuli Hospital, Wandera said.

Nagarenda tried to flee but residents, who heard Nakigudde wailing, cornered her as she climbed a nearby storied building.

They stripped and beat her severely. A mobile Police team saved her from the mob and whisked her to Kabalagala Police Station, Wandera said.

Born in Kibuli, Nagarenda is reportedly Ssembusi’s first wife.

Because of endless rows, Ssembusi is said to have thrown her out of the house and married Nakigudde, with whom he had one child, Wandera said.

However, it is said Ssembusi later rented a house for Nagarenda in the same area. They have four children.

According to Kabalagala Police chief Wesley Nganize, Nagarenda’s interrogation had not started because she was unwell after the beating from the mob. He added that the knife used in the attack had been recovered.

A total of 165 people died across the country last year as a result of domestic violence.
