Ginger can be grown indoors
Ginger originated from Asia, specifically China and India. In the local language of the area where it originated from, ginger means ‘with a body like a horn’.

For centuries the Chinese used ginger to treat various diseases. In western Europe where it was introduced in the 19th century, ginger was one of the first spices to be used. The rhizome known as ginger root became so popular in Europe that every home had to have some.

Ugandans love their ginger, grated or grounded or sliced into small pieces which they use to spice tea, as medicine or as one of the ingredients in various dishes.

Ginger can be grown indoors in containers, and in many homes it is used to treat indigestion, nausea and other illnesses.

The medicinal spice, which is commonly used to make cough syrup, has of late become very scarce on the local market. A kilo that was being sold sh2,000 in October has gradually gone up over the months to sh2,200, sh2,400, sh3,000 and finally to sh3,500 by December 7.

The scarcity has forced retailers in Kalerwe, Katwe, Nakasero and Owino markets to raise their price to sh4,000 per kilogram.

Traders say the ginger season is coming to an end which is causing scarcity. The little that is on the market is mainly from Butambala district.
