THE government has received about sh115b for climate change projects, Maria Mutagamba, the water and environment minister, has said.

The grant is part of a pledge by industrialised countries at the recent UN climate change conference in Mexico to give $30b support climate change mitigation projects in developing countries.

Addressing a press conference at the media centre, Mutagamba said Uganda’s application for the funds through the world bank had been accepted.

“We have received $50m and we hope to get an equal amount by end of next year,” Mutagamba said.

She said a team from the World Bank would visit Uganda to assess environment projects before the next grant is released.

She also said the government had identified priorities for climate change mitigation, among them tree -planting, rain water harvesting, wetland protection, the establishment of the environmental Police force and solid waste management.

The executive director of the National Environmental Management Authority, Aryamanya Mugisha, said several districts would benefit from carbon trading through various projects under the clean development mechanism.

Aryamanya said the projects would help to lower the level of emissions of greenhouse gases in the country.
