THE Mufti of Uganda, Sheikh Shaban Ramathan Mubajje, has said next year he will start a university to strengthen Muslim education in Uganda.

He also said that as one of his new year resolutions, Kibuli Hospital should also be equipped to handle major operations.

Mubajje also vowed to prevent the council from being dominated by one group. “We want Uganda Muslim Supreme Council to be for every Muslim in the country, it shouldn’t be for Kibuli, Nateete or Nakasero,” Mubajje explained.

He made the remarks on Saturday at a memorial service for the late Mariam Ahimbisibwe, the wife of retired Mbarara district Kadhi Sheikh Abdulnoor Kaduyu, in Bushenyi district.

Mubajje said he met Idi Amin, who told him to protect the council and unite Muslims. “In 1991, I met Idi Amin at Jeddah airport he told me many things and emphasised the protection of the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council, which he established in the 1970’s,” Mubajje said.

He added that the council was governed by a constitution which gives the Mufti a five-year-renewable term.
