‘We won’t allow one group dominate ‘

THE Mufti of Uganda, Sheikh Shaban Mubajje, has vowed not to allow one group of Muslims dominate the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council. He said one group wanted to serve their own interests.

THE Mufti of Uganda, Sheikh Shaban Mubajje, has vowed not to allow one group of Muslims dominate the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council. He said one group wanted to serve their own interests.
Mubajje said the council was established by the former President of Uganda, Iddi Amin, for the benefit of all Muslims in the country.
“We want Uganda Muslim Supreme Council to serve every Muslim in the country. It should not be for Kibuli, Nateete or Nakasero,†he said.
Mubajje made the remarks on Saturday at a memorial service for Mariam Ahimbisibwe, the late wife of retired Mbarara district Kadhi Sheikh Abdulnoor Kaduyu, in Bushenyi district.
He said he met Iddi Amin in 1991 at Jedha Airport and he told him to keep Muslims united and protect the council.
“I met a tall man in 1991 at Jedha Airport, only to realise that it was Iddi Amin. He told me many things but, most importantly, emphasised protection of the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council, which he established,†Mubajje added.
He said the council was governed by the constitution, which was signed by Sheikh Badru Kakungulu.
Mubajje scoffed at those seeking to change the constitution with the intention of serving their own interests. Mubajje said the constitution allowed a Mufti to serve a five-year term and serve for five more if he still had the potential to serve.
Mubajje revealed his plans for next year, which include building a university to help raise the education levels of Muslims in Uganda. He also said Kibuli Hospital would be equipped to handle theatre operations next year.
Mubajje said the 24 new Uganda Muslim Supreme Council districts were created to serve all Muslim communities in the country.
The districts are Kisoro, Ntungamo, Ibanda, Bundibugyo, Koboko, Moyo, Kotido, Apac, Kitgum, Sironko, Kumi, Butalejja , Mayuge, Bugiri, Ssembabule, Bukomansimbi, Kalangala, Mityana, Buluuli, Nakasongola and Kayunga among others.
