JONNA Turigye provided a highlight of the pool season when he shrugged off a strong field win the Nile Special Pool Open grand final in September.

The national seed two player edged out Hamfred Nsubuga in a nail-biting final that kept a mammoth crowd of spectators on their toes late into the night at Lugogo.

“Thank God because it was a very tight game. But in such situations, I have always leant to push it harder,” were the word of the champion who has vowed to do everything possible to defend his hard won crowd next season.

The 5-4 feat earned Turigye the top prize of sh2m and two pool tables in the one-day championship that involved the top cream of 128 players countrywide.

It was no easy task though for top seeds as the event which involves a two-month qualifiers that drew the best cream in the pub sport.

The climax of a two month qualifying rounds involved 40 playing centers throughout the country.

Defending champion and seed one Fred Namanya was among the casualties after he was shown the exit in round two in the prestigious event. Namanya quest to retain the title fell on hard rock when he cashes 2-1 to Apollo Baguma.

Turigye who won the first frame in the best of nine had to sweat all the way as his opponent always surged ahead in what was a see-saw affair till the last moment when he managed to over come him.

However, Samona Pool club remained the team to beat on the local scene.

The Rubaga outfit cemented their dominance after beating Lumas club to carry the honour in the National Pool Day on December 18. Muzamil Walugembe of Zana club sealed the cap of the season after winning the Christmas Cup recently.

“It was a very successful season. Our only set back is that we did not manage to take the sport to schools,” said Pool Association of Uganda (PAU) chairman Godfrey Mabirizi.
