Bunamwaya out of CAF over cash woes

UGANDA Super League champions Bunamwaya SC withdrew from the 2010 CAF Champions League for financial reasons, a source close the club has revealed.
The source noted yesterday that FUFA president Lawrence Mulindwa, who is the principal benefactor of the club, took the decision to withdraw the club from the continental premier soccer competition because he felt he would be stretched financially considering his involvement with the national team, the Cranes, in the 2012 Africa Nations Cup campaign.
The source said that efforts by Bunamwaya officials to raise funds or secure sponsorship for the club were all futile.
The Champions League starts next month while the Africa Nations Cup qualifiers resume in March with Uganda travelling to Guinea Bissau.
CAF Media officer Kennedy Makambira revealed in an email to New Vision that Bunamwaya wrote to CAF pulling out of the 2011 Champions League on December 7.
Bunamwaya chairman Tedious Kitandwe alluded to the financial difficulties at the club when contacted for comment yesterday.
“Don’t blow the situation out of proportion. Bunamwaya has the right to withdraw from the Champions League,†Kitandwe said yesterday.
“For now just take it that Bunamwaya are not on the CAF fixtures and it is unlikely that we shall be there this year,†Kitandwe added.
However, Bunamwaya officials had earlier put it on FUFA chief executive Edgar Watson, whom they said had received their registration papers and so, was the one to explain why the club did not appear in the CAF draws.
