THE success of any association is determined by its ability to hold action all year round and being represented on the international scene. Uganda Badminton Association (UBA) scored on these two fronts.

Tough start, new home
The Roofings International Open that attracted stars from over 14 countries got the UBA season underway. But UBA missed the opportunity to hold the event at Lugogo Indoor stadium that was being re-furbished at the time.

UBA re-located to Sharing Youth Centre in Nsambya that hosted the Africa U-18 and Africa Senior championships soon after the Roofings Open.

The Sharing Youth Centre later provided venue for several other events.

International success
Uganda secured success at the All Africa Schools championships. New entrants Crane High outwitted Espirit du Saint of Mauritius 3-2 to take gold in the boys’ final.

Shamim Bangi and Daisy Nakalyango also claimed gold medals after beating South Africa’s Fischardt College 3-0 in the girl’s final.

“It was a tough event, we are a step better than the year before,” noted Bangi after winning the medal.

Elsewhere, the youth team won bronze at a regional youth tournament.

Uganda’s players also featured at the Commonwealth Games but failed to advance from the group series after managing only one win.
UBA CEO Simon Mugabi said ta number of his players have a bright future.
