PRESIDENT Yoweri Museveni has donated sh65m to thirteen SACCOs in Kamuli district.

The grant was part of a pledge made by President Museveni in August, 2010 during his NAADS tour of the area.

While handing over the cash to 13 SACCOs at Kamuli Youth Centre on Tuesday, Rebecca Kadaga, the deputy speaker of Parliament and Kamuli woman MP, cautioned members against misuse of the funds. She urged them to use the funds to increase their loan portfolio, savings and increase on membership.

Kadaga, who distributed sh5m to the SACCOs, said: “SACCOs in Busoga were not being given attention whenever they could request for funds from the Microfinance Support Centre because they were not doing well and others had poor record keeping facilities.”

“During his tour in Kamuli, President Museveni met the management of various SACCOs in the district at the Kamuli Youth Centre and was told that the district had 13 lead SACCOs.

He promised to give each sh5m after he had donated sh50m to Lolwe Island SACCO in August.

However, some members from the Integration of Disabled Person’s Association (IDIPA SACCO) and Kamuli Pensioners, who were on the official list to benefit from the presidential pledge, were disappointed when they were not given any money.

“How can they disappoint us yet the IDIPA SACCO was number 11 on the list of the beneficiaries?” Joy Nakyesa, the treasurer of the organisation, complained.

Samuel Kiirya, the treasurer of the Kamuli district pensioners, said they were on the beneficiary list that was signed by Stephen Mubiru, the Kamuli LC5 chairperson, but was surprised when his group did not get the sh5m.

Commenting on the complaints after the function, Kadaga said they would seek financial support from the Micro-finance Support Centre to help additional SACCOs that did not benefit from the presidential pledge.

She requested Frederick Ssentongo, the Kamuli district commercial officer, to identify the SACCOs which did not benefit from the President’s pledge so that they could benefit from the sh20m to be distributed to each cooperative society in Kamuli by the Micro-finance Support Centre.
