LET us look back through the last 12 months at what the fashion scene in Uganda has been like. |A couple of our designers had a very lucrative year but the local fashion scene was on the whole, dreary. Cecilia Okoth had a chat with several local designers in town regarding what rocked this year and the predictions they had for the coming year and writes.

Empire waist skirts, free dress tops and long linen dresses surely rocked. The good thing about these specific attires is that any one of any shape and size can wear them on and look good.

Panty hose and leggings go without mentioning. These have been very handy yet fashionable for the ladies. They are specially worn with dress tops and short dresses to enhance the look of the outfit.

The demand for original outfits like weather-friendly cotton free shirts has constantly been up. Also designer T-shirts that carry meaningful messages that promote general well being, happiness, comment on society, living safely have been popular this year.

It is until late that we have seen candidate T-shirts flock the market because of the election mood in the country. These are in different colours depending on the candidate one supports. Animal print items too have been very trendy this year. The bags and shoes for example really look fashionable and many women have been buying an item that has an animal print design.

When it comes to shoes, platforms and plastics have really been very affordable and handy. We also will not forget mentioning high-heeled and flat gladiators. These in particular were very famous among the women.

The demand for tailored products like kitenge was trendy this year both at home and even on the international market. This was because people were tired of buying already made outfits which tend to be common and are limiting as far as design is concerned. Chunky jewellery and African beads do not go without mentioning. They are very affordable and can match with any out fit.

We have seen a lot of waist jackets, ray bands/geeky shades, masculine skinny jeans and low sole snickers. These although imported have been very trendy in the fashion industry this year. Boots, especially the ankle ones have been very popular with jeans. These look very stylish.

Bow ties too have been very trendy for the business and casual look. Scarves which act as an additional accessory that enhance one’s look were very common this year for both male and female.

Fashion predictions for 2011
In Uganda, it is really hard to predict what fashion will come next in the industry. Ugandans like their classic look unlike in Europe where things change so easily.

When we talk about linen garments, one can definitely not go wrong without it next year depending on how one uses it. People have also grown fond of colourful outfits which will also be the in thing come next year.

We also see the French cut style come back in the fashion industry. These are simple dresses that can be used for work and functions. To be specific, Audrey Hepburn’s style is likely to hit the waves next year.

She is an actress from the 1950’s and was famous for her long tight like dresses which are likely to be next year’s hit.

Feminine blouses and dresses with the broad shoulder look may also make a come back next year. These have an abstract and classic look yet appear nice and neutral.

Come 2011, we shall see more youth appreciate fashion, become more independent, make unique, original and yet smart attires because it is pays off.

I am only hoping that people buy more of Ugandan designs next year to support the industry because they also look good.
