Kibaki names new cabinet

NAIROBI, Friday — Newly elected Kenyan President Mwai Kibaki named his cabinet here Friday, with running mate Michael Wamalwa nominated vice-president of the eastern African country.

Also listed in the new cabinet are Kalonzo Musyoka, for foreign affairs and international cooperation, George Saitoti for education and Raila Odinga for roads and public works.

The Cabinet now stands as follows: Provincial Administration Chris Murungaru; assistant Stephen Tarus; Public Service Geoffrey Parpai; assistant Maurice Dzoro; vice-president Wamalwa Kijana; minister of state in VP’s Office Jebii Kilimo; minister for finance David Mwiraria; assistant Mutua Katuku.

Kibaki, 71, leader of the National Rainbow Coalition, won the presidential election and promised the country a “smaller, slimmer and more efficient government.”
Kibaki won 62.2% of the valid votes cast in last month’s landmark polls, according to definitive results released Friday.

Kibaki’s main challenger in the December 27 elections, Uhuru Kenyatta, who stood for the Kenya African National Union (KANU) won 31.3%.

Kibaki’s NARC won 125 of the 210 elected seats in parliament against KANU’s 64.
NARC’s 59.5% share of the seats will be sufficient to push through legislation, but not to change the constitution without the support of other parties.
